October League Member Of The Month
The L.A. Derby Dolls would like to congratulate one of our Official Photographers, Stalkerazzi for being named League Member of the Month for October 2014. Stalkerazzi is the eye behind the lens that captured many of your favorite roller derby action shots. He was with LADD from 2006-2010 and has returned this season. He has occasionally travelled with home teams and the Ri-ettes to photograph away games.
Learn more about Stalkerazzi and his contributions to the L.A. Derby Dolls and the sport of modern roller derby:
LADD: How did you find derby? Or did it find you?
S: Ex-LADD ref Cagey Bea took me to an LADD bout at the North Hollywood YMCA and I was hooked. I was working for a newspaper at that time and found a local connection, so I did a 6-month photo story on the Inland Empire Derby Dames, which was incredible. I moved on to LADD after that.
LADD: In what ways has your life outside of roller derby influence the extra tasks you take on with the league?
S: I get to explore, workout and sharpen my photo skills at derby in ways I don't always have the freedom to at work.
LADD: What was your personal favorite derby moment?
S: It was a different league (sorry!), but I was photographing nervous skaters backstage at the very first IEDD bout in San Bernardino when the whole league surprised me with my own IEDD league derby shirt, complete with hand-painted name "Stalkerazzi" on the back.
LADD: A genie gives you 3 wishes, what do you wish for?
S: Infinite photographic memory, mutant healing factor, power of flight. So selfish!
LADD: What is your goal for the 2014 season?
S: To be better—to know (or at least meet) everyone in the league, to know and understand derby better, and also to use remotes.
Some of Stalkerazzi’s most well recognized work is displayed at the Doll Factory. As fans wait in line to receive their wristbands, they crowd up against a mural of skaters. The center mural was painted from a photo taken by Stalkerazzi, featuring retired Sirens, Mila Minute raising a fist to the sky in a victory pose with skater Roxy Cotton. The mural was painted by Dave Morris with assistance by Vince Wheel and Cagey Bea.
