Sirens vs Varsity Brawlers in the 2012 Championship Bout

on Saturday, November 3rd, 2012.

Los Angeles – The L.A. Derby Dolls have delivered an incredible 2012 home season, with the nail-biting finale going down on Saturday, November 3rd, 2012.  Last year, the Sirens put an end to the Tough Cookies' winning streak by clinching the 2011 championship title, showing the world that the cops were in charge.  The Sirens have spent the 2012 season undefeated and are sounding the alarms, vowing that victory will once again be theirs.  Ready to put up a fight are the feisty Varsity Brawlers, raring to take the trophy in their championship debut.  These incredible skaters have been training hard for this last battle of the year, proud to be on the final two teams standing on the track and with their eyes on the championship trophy.  Will the Sirens leave the track with another champs title under their belt or will the Varsity Brawlers show their fans they are not to be messed with, claiming the number one spot for the very first time? Do not miss this battle! Join the excitement on Saturday, November 3rd, at The Doll Factory, located in Historic Filipinotown. Don’t get left out in the cold, get your tickets today.

About the L.A. Derby Dolls:

Founded in 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls (www.derbydolls.com/la) are Southern California’s premiere women’s banked-track, quad-skating, roller derby league. Within the league, four fierce teams battle for dominance: Fight Crew, Sirens, Tough Cookies and Varsity Brawlers. The L.A. Ri-Ettes are L.A. Derby Doll’s all-star team that competes on a national level against the best of the best in the country. While their uniforms may be stylish and their names playful, do not be fooled by appearances – the L.A. Derby Dolls are athletes who skate a sport that is unscripted and real. Honored as a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association, the L.A. Derby Dolls embody the do-it-yourself, “for the skaters, by the skaters” ethos of modern women’s roller derby.

The L.A. Derby Dolls are one of only thirteen leagues in the U.S. playing roller derby on a banked track. Like most modern female roller derby leagues, the Derby Dolls are volunteer-run and give back to the community that has embraced them. The league also operates the Junior Derby Dolls for girls ages 8-17.

How did you get involved with roller derby? When did you start?
Fresh off the boat...ok the plane in 2006, I was looking for a way to still be a tough NY'er but in a new city.  I checked out Craigslist hoping to find a dodge ball league, (I know what your thinking but dodge ball was cool in 2006) but instead I came across this bad ass flyer for LADD. The ad sucked me in and the rest is history.

How did you pick your derby name?
I can't take credit for that, it was my cousin Gina who came up with it. I grew up in the town where Amy Fisher and Joey Buttafuoco first started their affairs. We actually used to get our cars fixed at the Buttafuoco's auto body shop.

Derby or non-derby related, who is your hero and why?
That would be my parents.  Both cancer survivors, they have overcome more than I could ever imagine. They taught me that anything is possible with a little hard work and dedication.  They gave me the courage and support to follow my dreams.

What's your personal favorite derby moment?
I have so many great moments but I like to live in the present so I'd have to say making it to Champs! Ask me in one week and it will be winning Champs!

What is your pre-bout ritual?
Cleaning, turkey sandwich, lint rolling and of course a 5 hour energy drink.

What is your theme song?
"I Feel Pretty", West Side Story

A genie gives you 3 wishes, what do you wish for?
  • Custom Skates
  • A romantic trip around the world with my husband
  • Unlimited airline tickets so I can fly back and forth to see my family

You've been in a leadership position for VB since the beginning, how does it feel to see your team competing for the trophy?
As each season passes I see a team of girls getting stronger and stronger.  I have a roster of the most talented, smart and dedicated skaters.  It's truly an honor to go into the 2012 Championship bout leading them, I couldn't ask for a better group of skaters.  We have waited four years for this moment and it couldn’t come at a better time...this bout will be my last as Captain of the Varsity Brawlers.

How has derby affected your life?
Roller Derby was one of the best things to ever happen in my life.  It has made me such a stronger person and gave me the confidence I have always been looking for.  There is something so powerful about a group of females working together, supporting one another for a sport we all love.  When the time comes I will walk away with some of the best friends I will ever know, a team of girls who I call my sisters, lots of purple shirts and hopefully a trophy.
