August League Member of the Month

The L.A. Derby Dolls would like to congratulate Sub Pool skater Rosy Machete, #1095, for being named League Member of the Month for August, 2014! If you haven’t seen Rosy Machete putting up great defense on the track as a tough-as-nails blocker during Baby Doll Brawls and Sub Pool scrimmages, you would probably recognize her from the Community Service events she helps organize at the Doll Factory. Rosy Machete has been skating with the L.A. Derby Dolls since August 2011, and serves as the Head of the Community Service Committee; working with organizations to promote causes supported by the L.A. Derby Dolls and providing services to help the community around the Doll Factory and its members. Rosy Machete has worked closely with Peace Over ViolenceHomeboy IndustriesDown Syndrome Association of Los AngelesBig Sunday, Children of the Night, and is currently collaborating with the Mexican Consulate and St. Vincent’s Medical Center for the sixth annual Health Fair at the Doll Factory. She hopes to provide the community with health care services and resources that may otherwise be difficult to obtain. The Health Fair is one of the largest Community Service events hosted in conjunction with the L.A. Derby Dolls. The Health Fair is tentatively planned for Saturday, October 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Check out our short interview with Rosy Machete:

LADD: How did you find derby? Or did it find you?

RM: I had heard about this roller derby thing, so one day I decided to show up for LADD try-outs.  I borrowed gear and skates, and hadn’t been on skates since I was like 7 years old. I did horribly! I was the slowest person on the banked track, I didn’t know how to stop, and fell quite a bit. Needless to say, I did not make it to fresh meat but it didn’t matter, I had already fallen in love.

LADD: Derby or non derby related, who is your hero and why?

RM: My hero is my mama. She is tougher than I will ever be and I play a full contact sport on wheels for fun.

LADD: A genie gives you 3 wishes, what do you wish for?

RM: A bigger and better Doll Factory! With lots of parking and lots of restrooms!  It will have a huge locker room with showers, a steam room and a sauna.  There will also be a fitness room for all the off skates training, a large kitchen with a fridge full of Golden Road beer, the Doll Repair team will have a state of the art clinic, the Referteria will have state of the art kitchen appliances that community service can borrow (thank you Enforcers for letting us borrow your toaster), a huge workshop for the Track Monkeys, and all new RAD equipment that will not crash or freeze in the middle of a game. I would like an IPad with infinity GB for school. I wish for world peace.

LADD: What is your goal for the 2014 season?

RM: To skate!

Move Update July 7th

Hello Derby Doll Supporters,

Over the last few months we have been going through negotiations to try to secure a warehouse located in Boyle Heights for a possible move in mid July. Since dealing with commercial properties for our public use involves a multitude of issues from the building owner, the neighborhood, and our own requirements - ie: parking, security, public assemblage etc, it can and has been difficult to negotiate and alleviate all issues. After a few months of back and forth with the lease, we have still not come to an agreement with terms that are in our best interests for our longevity and therefore we are unable to move under the current conditions offered in the proposed lease.

We are fortunate that for the time being we will be staying at The Doll Factory on Temple Street and will start our 2014 home season here in August. We will continue to search for a new home - which still may be the Boyle Heights space - but will take more time to negotiate fully. We have not been given a move out date from our current building owner so we will continue with our month-to-month terms here. During our contract negotiations we did not stop the hunt for a home, and in fact we have been able to increase our efforts and scope of locations with outside help from our league supporters. There are many opportunities and people out there who want to help us with finding and creating a beautiful new home, but since our needs are very specific and non- traditional, it’s just going to take some more time and more negotiations to determine the best home for us.

Thank you so much for patience and support! If you would like to be notified of updates as they happen, please sign up for our mailing list on our fundraiser page.

Sincerely,
Demolicious, Amber Alert! & Brandi Iron
