Interview with Tough Cookies’ Gori Spelling- Tix on sale now for Tough Cookies vs. Varsity Brawlers April 17!

Gori Spelling is the co-captain of the Tough Cookies and an All-Star blocker and jammer.  We talked to Gori about the Cookies’ venerable history, the challenges ahead, and why the Cookies aren’t giving up their status as Champs any time soon.

You can see Gori and the Tough Cookies take on the Varsity Brawlers on Saturday April 17- tickets are on sale NOW here.

Q:  The Cookies are LA Derby Dolls’ first repeat champions.  How do you plan to continue your dominance in 2010?

GS:  I think that never underestimating our opponents and tailoring our practices towards what we think will help us defeat each specific team is key.

Q:  The last time VB played the Tough Cookies  (October 2009), the Cookies won by 35 points.  Do you think that this game will be any different?

GS:  Both teams have a 1-0 record, so neither want to leave the track on the 17th as the team who got defeated.  Of course we would hope for a large point spread like the last time we played, but VB has improved so much since then that we are anticipating a close game.

Q:  You’ve been a Tough Cookie since 2007.  How has the team changed over the last few years?

GS:  The spirit of the team is the same today as it was in 2007 when I became a Cookie.  We're the fun team and I think that having a good time while playing this game is key.  Iron Maiven has been the captain since 2006, which gives us consistency, and we're lucky to have such a great leader who motivates us to be our best!

Q:  What are the biggest challenges that the Tough Cookies will face in 2010?

GS:  It's a lot of pressure to be defending Champs; every other team wants to take us down.  We just need to stay one step ahead and keep learning.

Q:  Which Brawler are you looking forward to hitting hardest?

GS:  Not anyone in particular!  Just whoever is in my way or my jammers’ way!

Q:  Why should fans root for the Cookies on April 17?

GS:  Why not!?  Have you met us?  The Tough Cookies LOVE our fans!

Q:  Describe the 2010 Tough Cookies in 5 words or less.

GS:  2010 DO FOR IT AGAIN!

Interview with Tough Cookies’ Iron Maiven- Tix on sale now for Tough Cookies vs. Fight Crew Feb. 13!

Tough Cookies Captain Iron Maiven has led her troop of rough and tumble Girl Scouts to victory at Championships for the last two years- the only repeat winners in Derby Dolls’ history.  With Co-Captain Gori Spelling, Maiven wants to lead the Cookies to an unprecedented third championship in 2010.  We talked to Maiven about her leadership strategy, the challenges her team faces this season, and her favorite flavor cookie.

You can see Maiven and the Tough Cookies take on the Fight Crew on February 13- tickets are on sale NOW here.  We WILL sell out!

Q:  This is your fourth year as captain.  How have the Tough Cookies changed under your leadership?

IM:  I think my leadership has changed, which has in turn affected the team.  Motivating, offering constructive criticism, and encouraging while still maintaining discipline is a difficult balance that four years has allowed me to perfect.  The team decides what the team wants to do at our practices, how we train, what we study, how we strategize.  It’s a group effort, but it’s my job to take their ideas and goals and find ways to get us to achieve those goals through specific drills and discussions.  I think we're doing a pretty good job, don't you?  Ha ha ha...

Q:  What are the biggest challenges that the Tough Cookies will face in 2010?

IM:  The biggest challenge we face right now is the drive and hunger other teams have for a win against us.

We watched the Swarm join our 2009 season and just destroy our other teams; it actually took the spotlight off us, for once.  We were already the 2008 champions, but the Swarm seemed to present a bigger threat than we did.  That was our motivation last season, beating the competition.  Now, in 2010, I fear we're perceived that way, as the biggest threat.  And that kind of perception can generate some serious competition.

And the counter to that is that it’s a lot harder to pump up the team when we already have 2 trophies, when we already defeated the undefeated, when we already proved we can walk in the underdogs and take the gold.  We can't get big heads about this season; we need to remember that we are 0-0 like 3 other teams.  Right now Varsity Brawlers are ahead of us with 1 win!

Q:  You’ve been off skates with a knee injury since last fall.  Has this changed your perspective on leading and training your team?

IM:  Being injured has allowed me to step back and WATCH my team.  When you're a captain AND a skater, you're constantly trying to critique while skating.  You miss a lot because you are on the track with the team and can only see what's going on within your pack.  Being able to step back and watch from the infield has created new strategy and skills I've implemented in our training.

Q:  The Cookies are LA Derby Dolls’ first repeat champions.  How do you plan to continue your dominance in 2010?

IM:  It’s difficult to set goals when you're the first team to win back-to-back championships, against odds that didn't appear to be in our favor.  This year the Cookies are putting a focus on individuals.  So many Tough Cookie team skaters have stepped up to the challenge of maintaining championship status by upping their personal skills.  I'd like to see more "hybrid skaters" on the Cookies, meaning we all skate offensive and defensive positions, and do both WELL.

I have some other goals in mind that will help us push ourselves, but I fear if I mention them, I'll have four teams joining forces to bring us down.  Ha!  You'll have to come out and see what we have up our little Girl Scout sleeves!

Q:  What do you admire most about Fight Crew?

IM:  I admire Fight Crew's strength, experience, and leadership.   Haught Wheels and Janis Choplin are two of my biggest idols in the league.  Haught Wheels is a teacher and an all around amazing skater.   Her accomplishments within this league, in such a short amount of time, on top of her day job, are motivating to me.  Janis Choplin is a fitness instructor, constantly pushing the league to new training, starting both Punk Rope and Derby Por Vida, opening up our facility to the community and skaters.  I seek leadership, rules, and training advice from both, and when we're not about to duke it out on the track, our teams often practice together and manage for one another.  It is always a difficult bout for the Tough Cookies both because of the level of competition, and the level of friendship we have.

Q:  Which flight attendant are you looking forward to taking down?

IM:  Oh gee, well, I can't physically take anyone down, so I'm just looking forward to bringing some strategy to the bout that Fight Crew doesn't expect.  Fight Crew is incredibly savvy on their rules, and their strategy and skating style reflect that in their bouts.  I'm hoping that we are indeed one step ahead of them and can mess with their heads and packs a bit with what we have to bring.

Q:  What’s your favorite kind of cookie?

IM:  Mmmmmmmmmmmm, my favorite cookie is chocolate chocolate chip.  The more chocolate, the better!

Q:  Describe the 2010 Tough Cookies in 5 words or less.

IM:  Fierce, aggressive, athletes, fun, CHAMPIONS!!!!!

L.A. Times: Derby Dolls setting the fashion pace

At a recent sold-out roller bout, almost 2,000 Angelenos rallied with beer and high spirits to support their favorite Derby Dolls teams. A long-haired, newbie attendee stood in awe of a skater zipping by.

It wasn't just the skater's athletic prowess that was enviable . . . it was her sporty fishnets and hot-pants "boutfit."

"I want to try it, just to see what I would look like in the outfit," new fan Cassandra McGrath, a 24-year-old teacher, said wistfully.

Losanjealous.com Spends Spanksgiving at the Doll Factory

DF is thankful for tonite’s LADD bout ‘tween the Tough Cookies and the Swarm. If there’s a more mouth-watering matchup, DF hasn’t yet seen it. Both teams are tied for first in the league, both teams are undefeated in 2009, both teams are mortal locks to re-compete in December’s Championship Bout. Tonight’s titular tussle is thus titantic but also tantalizing, as it affords los aficionados de la derby a sneak preview of the carnage that will surely be forthcoming in the title match. The bout’s outcome (boutcome?) may not be strictly relevant to the championship, but it affords strategic possiblities galore, with the need for momentum, and the desire to take psychological advantage, and the possibilities for strategic gameswomanship, and what have you. It’s on, beyatches. Fully.

SEASON’S BEATINGS: 2009 CHAMPIONSHIP COMES TO DOLL FACTORY

Tickets On Sale For Hotly Anticipated Rematch Between Tough Cookies and Swarm On Saturday, Dec. 5; Last Chance To See Roller Derby In 2009

LOS ANGELES – The L.A. Derby Dolls (www.derbydolls.com/la), Southern California’s premiere all-female, banked track roller derby league, will close the 2009 season with a crash on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Doll Factory (1910 Temple Street, Los Angeles CA 90026).  This championship bout between 2008 titleholders, the Tough Cookies, and the undefeated Swarm, will be a knock-down, drag-out fight to the finish.

Fans received a thrilling sneak preview on Nov. 14 when these two dominant teams faced off for the first time. Both went into the game undefeated, but the Swarm emerged victorious. The Cookies came back from a halftime 20-point deficit, narrowing the score to 84-79 in the fourth quarter. Hindered by numerous skater ejections, however, the Cookies fell apart in the final two minutes of the game, losing 79 to 94.

The Swarm – the L.A. Derby Dolls’ fifth and newest team – is now ranked number one for the season, but as demonstrated in this last match, the championship title is truly up for grabs. Undoubtedly, the veteran Cookies want to save face following their only loss of the season, and repeat their 2008 championship victory. The Swarm, meanwhile, is anxious to see their first championship banner hang inside the Doll Factory. Whatever the outcome, this rematch promises to be the not-to-be-missed battle of the season.

Live karaoke ensemble, The Lemones, will return to the Doll Factory for a set of 80s karaoke. Derby fans will have the opportunity to belt out their favorite 80s hits before a panel of discerning L.A. Derby Dolls’ judges. The Helvins will perform at halftime. Derby Dolls' events offer a full range of entertainment off the track, with the Vendor Village featuring art, jewelry and clothes, food from Garage Pizza and Hot Dog on a Stick; wine from Paso Creek; beer from Tecate and Alex’s Bar.

The L.A. Derby Dolls are one of only five leagues in the U.S. playing roller derby on a banked track. Like most modern female roller derby leagues, the Derby Dolls are volunteer-run and give back to the community that has embraced them. Honored as a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association, the Derby Dolls also operate a Junior Derby League for girls ages 8-17.

Tickets are now available to purchase at http://www.derbydolls.com/la. General admission tickets are $20; VIP tickets are $40.00. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and close at half time. Interview with Tough Cookies' LEGacy - Tix on sale now for Cookies vs. Swarm 11/14

Photo by Charlie "Shutterthug" ChuAmerica's team, the Tough Cookies, are the reigning champions and continue their impressive run by remaining undefeated this season. They face their biggest challenge against the equally dominate Swarm on Nov. 14. We talked with the Cookies' all-star blocker, LEGacy, about her inspiring journey from injury to becoming one of the best jammer assists in the league, and why she's not afraid of no bees.

See if LEGacy and her Cookies can withstand the Swarm LIVE on Saturday, NOVEMBER 14. Only one team will be left unscathed and retain bragging rights as being undefeated. Get your tickets now at www.derbydolls.com/la

Q:    How long have you been a skater and how did you first become involved with the L.A. Derby Dolls?

LG:   I have been a member of the LADD for 4 years.  My buddy called me and said he had found the perfect hobby for me: ROLLER DERBY. I wasn't too sure how it was played. But I knew skates and hitting other women was the right sport for me.

Q:     Your name has some serious origins - tell us a bit about your journey.
LG:    I went to my first practice on 9/25/05 and fell head over heels in love. So, in love I came back the next day...I couldn't wait. I made it through, to the last ten minutes of practice. We were playing freeze tag. I was trying to stop and fell, breaking my left leg, both the Tibia and Fibula in 3 places.  I got surgery 9/27/05 and became the proud owner of 2 plates and 16 screws. We came up with my name at The Derby. Ref Sug said I needed a name that had to do with my injury. We came up with Broken LEGacy.  To keep the injuries at a minimum, I made the Broken silent. I now go by LEGacy these days.

Q:     What did it mean for the team to win championships last year, and how important is it for the Cookies to be the first in LADD history to repeat as champs?
LG:    Winning champs last year was EPIC.The Tough Cookies had not won a championship or a lot of games in the prior years!  We were just the fun team! We rallied for support last year and brought it home!!

This year is particularly important to us. We will be facing the Swarm for champs. They too are undefeated and want champs bad!  We want our trophy to stay at home and with the rightful keepers of it...The Tough Cookies.

Q:     You're one of the best jammer assists in the league. What fuels you to protect your Diva Jammers and what advice can you give to aspiring blockers?
LG:    My fuel is being a Bully Blocker. We have a code to uphold. Winning is a big reason to protect Divas. Plus they are pretty awesome!

As for aspiring blockers. Hit the biggest blocker that intimidates you and skate away. Face your biggest fears! When you hear that no one wants to be hit by you "because it hurts," come join the Bully Blockers.

Q:     What do you think of how dominant this new, fifth team - the Swarm - have been this season. What will it take to stop their impressive run?

LG:    I believe the Cookies have the skills, the ability to reset, the teamwork and cohesiveness to stop the Swarm. We have 2 opportunities to make it happen.

Q:     What skaters do you admire the most?

LG:    I would say [teammate] Venus D Maul'r. I always considered her my role model. I think she is an amazing skater, with so much talent. I think of her as silent but deadly. She will drop you quick and go get someone else.

Interview with Varsity Brawlers co-captain RAZORSLUT - Oct. 3 bout on sale now

Photo by Charlie "Shutterthug" ChuOn Oct. 3, the Varsity Brawlers face their biggest challenge against the reigning champions, the Tough Cookies. A true Cinderella story, the Brawlers have surprised fans by nearly defeating the Sirens, then fighting for a victory against the Fight Crew. With their last game of their memorable season drawing near, we spoke with team co-captain RAZORSLUT, a longtime veteran of the LADD, to get her thoughts on her team's dream run. GET YOUR TICKETS TO SEE THE VARSITY BRAWLERS' LAST GAME OF THE SEASON AGAINST THE TOUGH COOKIES NOW AT WWW.DERBYDOLLS.COM/LA

Q: How long have you been with the L.A. Derby Dolls and how did you first find out about the league?
RS: I have been with the league since Nov 2003. One night I went with retired skater Hadda Bad Day to a roller disco party, and while we there, she said "Hey you can skate a little". She mentioned that she had just started playing Roller Derby and I should go with her. I reluctantly agreed to go to a practice (coincidentally the same night she brought Tawdry Tempest). After my first practice and my first big hit, I was sold that there was nothing more perfect in the world for me to be doing.

Q: The Varsity Brawlers are coming off a major victory against a hard-fighting Fight Crew, a serious accomplishment for a first-season team. Given that you lost your debut by 55 points to the Swarm, then battled to nearly upseat the Sirens, how have you and Long Island Lolita maintained this momentum and how are you keeping your heads together given your success?
RS: Our team has worked so hard, and learned to enjoy playing together so much, we really focus on team building and having a great time while we work our little tails off. We have such a great team where everyone contributes in their own way. Girls like Eire Vengeance bring in such great ideas and drills, Tae Kwon Ho keeps us cracking up with her off track antics, Lucky amazes us with her fancy footwork, its really amazing to have a team that supports each other. Teamwork is the secret.....shhh don't tell the other teams that!

Q: Describe the Varsity Brawlers in 5 words or less.
RS: (This is really hard ) Teamwork, Pretty, Tenacious, Relentless, Stealthy

Q: As a longtime veteran, how has the league evolved in the several years you've been involved? How are the Varsity Brawlers different from your first team, the (now disbanded) Trust Fund Terrors?
RS: Originally I was a member of Fight Crew, back in the early days we played in a pillow factory next to Chinatown. Everything was so new then; it was a great moment in derby, there were only a handful of other leagues at the time. We really had to rely on each other to build everything, including the track. Then Broadzilla got pregnant, and she was the Captain of the Trust Fund Terrors. I was chosen to be the new cappy. When ACDG (Angel City Derby Girls) formed, we lost some skaters, and the league needed one team to disband, The Trust Fund Terrors volunteered. Fast forward to being drafted to the Brawlers. This team is so refreshing, and fun. Its amazing to see how the sport has evolved and how being surrounded by a team of girls with new ideas is so exciting. I know the future holds great things for the Brawlers and I am so lucky to be a part of that.

Q: After such a successful debut, what are your plans for the Brawlers to continue their meteoric rise in 2010?
RS: My plan for the Brawlers is lots of work on the track, and lots of team bonding time. The more time we spend together the better the team plays together. 2010 will see the Brawlers staying pretty and kicking ass.

Interview with Tough Cookies co-captain GORI SPELLING - Oct. 3 bout on sale now

Get to know...the Tough Cookies. Reigning champions, the Tough Cookies are led by Iron Maiven and Gori Spelling. One of the top jammers in the league, Gori is known for her athletic abilities, positive attitude and being the only skater who can properly rock a mohawk. Gori talks to us about the pressures of being champions and how the Cookies will take down the Varsity Brawlers. See the two teams LIVE on Saturday, OCTOBER 3. Get your tickets now at www.derbydolls.com/la

Q: How long have you been a skater and how did you become involved with the L.A. Derby Dolls?
GS: I went to my first fresh meat practice in September of 2006. I had been looking for something athletic to do and came across an online ad for a derby league. I did some searching online and found the LA Derby Dolls. I had never seen a bout before, but I could tell from the web site that this was the sport for me. I had previously been on an ice hockey team and did a lot of ‘aggressive inline skating’ during my high school years, so derby seemed like a great next step!

Q: What skaters past and present do you admire?
GS: My derby hero is Iron Maiven. She does so much for the league and is so good at all of it. She also has a full time job and I just have no idea how she fits it all in. Maiven is such a positive, fun leader and I hope she skates forever!

Q: You and your teammate, Laguna Beyatch, are one of the most formidable 1-2 combinations in the league. Are the two of you ever competitive with one another? How do you continue to drive each other?
GS: I don’t feel competitive with her at all on the track. We really work together and support each other…and we usually plan in advance to wear matchey outfits at practice…so I guess that’s our secret. Laguna and I got drafted to the Tough Cookies at the same time and we’ve just been BFFs since! We do get competitive when it comes to shopping though!

Q: The Tough Cookies have a personality all their own in the league, and have earned the reputation as not only the "fun team," but as one of the most strategic and intelligent teams. Tell us how you and captain Iron Maiven maintain high standards for the team and develop the chemistry that is your secret to success.
GS: As a team, we are really tight. We hang out together outside of practice quite a bit and I think that helps a lot to how fluid we can be on the track. Maiven always has new drills for us to try, new videos for us to learn from and she always keeps it fun.

Q: As reigning champions, do you feel pressure to repeat? How do you feel about the dominance of the Swarm who are currently 3-0?
GS: I think any team that was last year’s champions would feel pressure to repeat. The nice thing about playing the Swarm last is that we’ve been able to watch our other home teams skate against them and evaluate what works and what doesn’t.

Q: The Varsity Brawlers are coming off a major win (in addition to a huge near-upset of the Sirens), a serious feat for a first-season team. Given what a roll they are on, how will you combat their style?
GS: Trash-talking Long Island Lolita is my personal combat tactic.

Q: For being a self-professed "Diva Jammer," you are remarkably humble and lowkey both on and off the track. What exactly do you do to earn such a reputation as a Diva Jammer?
GS: Yeah, good point. ;) I am probably the least ‘Diva’ of the ‘Diva Jammers’ at the moment. I have vanity ‘Diva Jammer’ license plates though…doesn’t that count for anything? Are you suggesting I act out a bit? Do you want me to throw my iPhone at you?
