29 OCTOBER 2012 - SKATER OF THE MONTH

How did you get involved with roller derby? When did you start?
Fresh off the boat...ok the plane in 2006, I was looking for a way to still be a tough NY'er but in a new city.  I checked out Craigslist hoping to find a dodge ball league, (I know what your thinking but dodge ball was cool in 2006) but instead I came across this bad ass flyer for LADD. The ad sucked me in and the rest is history.

How did you pick your derby name?
I can't take credit for that, it was my cousin Gina who came up with it. I grew up in the town where Amy Fisher and Joey Buttafuoco first started their affairs. We actually used to get our cars fixed at the Buttafuoco's auto body shop.

Derby or non-derby related, who is your hero and why?
That would be my parents.  Both cancer survivors, they have overcome more than I could ever imagine. They taught me that anything is possible with a little hard work and dedication.  They gave me the courage and support to follow my dreams.

What's your personal favorite derby moment?
I have so many great moments but I like to live in the present so I'd have to say making it to Champs! Ask me in one week and it will be winning Champs!

What is your pre-bout ritual?
Cleaning, turkey sandwich, lint rolling and of course a 5 hour energy drink.

What is your theme song?
"I Feel Pretty", West Side Story

A genie gives you 3 wishes, what do you wish for?
  • Custom Skates
  • A romantic trip around the world with my husband
  • Unlimited airline tickets so I can fly back and forth to see my family

You've been in a leadership position for VB since the beginning, how does it feel to see your team competing for the trophy?
As each season passes I see a team of girls getting stronger and stronger.  I have a roster of the most talented, smart and dedicated skaters.  It's truly an honor to go into the 2012 Championship bout leading them, I couldn't ask for a better group of skaters.  We have waited four years for this moment and it couldn’t come at a better time...this bout will be my last as Captain of the Varsity Brawlers.

How has derby affected your life?
Roller Derby was one of the best things to ever happen in my life.  It has made me such a stronger person and gave me the confidence I have always been looking for.  There is something so powerful about a group of females working together, supporting one another for a sport we all love.  When the time comes I will walk away with some of the best friends I will ever know, a team of girls who I call my sisters, lots of purple shirts and hopefully a trophy.
