Bring Out the Gimp: Fight Crew v Varsity Brawlers | Los Anjealous

Vulvy and Vik at the railPrelude. How was your summer, dear readership? What’s that you say? It was good, with the sunny days and the outdoor recreation and the grill-cookouts and the friendly friends? Well, that’s great. I’m happy for you. Oh, and how was DF’s summer, you want to know? Why, how very kind of you to ask. Let’s see, how do I put this? How about en Francais: it blew le chunks. And to translate from the French for you goddamned philistines, that’s how the frogs say that DF’s summer was as about as enjoyable as eating an enormous, hairy elephant-ass sandwich with an XL plate of steaming kittykat feces on the side, all washed down with a 64oz tankard of yeti snot.

Ahem. To explain for those of you who have been living under a rock and/or failing to read regular DF-related updates on the justifiably popular blog “All DF All the Time”, DF (due, predictably, to a perilous combination of inebriation, clumsiness, and pure unadulterated idiocy) experienced a truly spectacular dual fracture of his left tibia and fibula back in mid-June and spent the rest of the summer largely horizontal and in various stages of massive discomfort and/or Vicodin-induced haze.

So it’s been a shut-in couple of months for DF, but his recovery is well under way and at long last it’s time for him to make his crutch-tastic debut, complete with comically pronounced limp. And what better place to re-introduce the world to the new, hobbled DF than the Doll Factory, where the Fight Crew will try to break their loooong regular season losing skid against the Varsity Brawlers, who are looking to win for the first time in their (admittedly short) history? In other words, derby people, it’s time to bring out the gimp!

Fight Crew v Varsity Brawlers | Big Wheel Magazine

Back from summer hiatus, Southern California’s renowned all-female derby league, LA Derby Dolls, presented a close scoring and brutal brawl between the Fight Crew and newbie team, Varsity Brawlers. The ladies came out with a vengeance putting on one of the best bouts this hard core bank track roller derby fan has seen in  recent memory.

Roller Derby

Known as having the hardest hitting ladies in the league, veteran team Fight Crew hasn’t won a bout the entire season. Headed up by Captains Janis Choplin and Haught Wheels, the team came out with baited breath hoping to take the junior Varsity Brawlers to school. The evening started off well for the team, but the young Varsity Brawlers came screaming back. Led by Captains Long Island Lolita and Razorslut, the team has earned respect holding off one of the best derby teams in the league, the Sirens.

The Rat City Rollergirls whetted Seattle's appetite for roller derby more than four years ago, with fans following them from a rink in West Seattle to a hangar in Magnuson Park to Key Arena earlier this year.

...

"It was one hurdle after the other," said Rebecca "Demolicious" Ninburg, 40, one of the co-founders of the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, a league formed in 2003 of about 130 strong who play to a sell-out capacity crowd of 1700 every three weeks. Tilted skaters are going there at the end of July to train with them. "We were constantly financially challenged; we had huge issues with venues; and learning how to manage an organization like this, a grassroots, all-volunteer, and to try to inspire people."

Ninburg, 40, a sculptor in the movie industry, is the league's one and only full-time paid employee, hasn't skated since she broke her arm in their first game.

"We couldn't afford anything with a ceiling, so we ended up on a rooftop in Chinatown," Ninburg said. "The landlords put up a fence so we wouldn't fly off."

She has some advice for Tilted skaters.
