LA Derby Dolls Provides Free Private Skate Clinic for Residents of Children of the Night For Big Sunday Weekend
Los Angeles - The LA Derby Dolls came together on Big Sunday Weekend to provide residents from Children of the Night with a skating workshop in an effort to promote a healthy and positive life style on Saturday May 14, 2011 at 1910 W. Temple St. Los Angeles CA, 90026.
The clinic was held as part of Big Sunday, Southern California’s largest community service project. This was the LA Derby Dolls’ third year working with Children of the Night, a nonprofit organization that provides a safe haven for children ages 11-17 who have been forced into prostitution.
The clinic focused on teaching residents how to skate, and the importance of teamwork and physical fitness to give them personal empowerment.
“We're so pleased that we were able to participate in Big Sunday and work with Children of the Night once again,” said Rebecca “Demolicious” Ninburg, Co-Founder of the LA Derby Dolls. “We believe strongly in COTN and their mission and believe that the Derby Dolls’ have a unique opportunity to help empower the residents through sport.”
Both residents and staff of children of the night learned about roller derby as a sport and how it can inspire teamwork, athleticism, and both mental and physical empowerment.
At the conclusion of the clinic, the LA Derby Dolls presented Children of the Night with LA Derby Doll t-shirts, individually embellished for each resident, and gave them the opportunity to participate in a mini scrimmage amongst themselves.
“We were so happy to share our passion for roller derby with others,” said LA Derby Dolls Tough Cookies skater and Community Service Committee Head Alex Jebsen aka Aggro Vader. “We feel it is our mission to motivate and encourage people to challenge themselves physically and mentally and to have fun while doing it. Physical activity has many therapeutic benefits, from an elevated mood to improved self-esteem and we couldn't think of a more deserving group of kids to share this with than with Children of the Night."
