L.A. TAKES ON SAN DIEGO IN ONGOING BATTLE FOR ROLLER DERBY DOMINANCE
L.A. Derby Dolls’ Fight Crew Spars With San Diego’s The Swarm in Banked Track Roller Derby Action on May 15
Los Angeles – The L.A. Derby Dolls, Southern California’s premiere women's banked track roller derby league, continue to smash through their exciting 2010 season on May 15th at the Doll Factory (1910 Temple Street), when the Fight Crew will work out a little sibling rivalry against sister league San Diego Derby Dolls’ the Swarm.
Fight Crew, led by captain Janis Choplin and co-captain Haught Wheels, lost by just 10 points to the Tough Cookies in February, and they’re eager to make a comeback. Crowd favorites like Tara Armov, Judy Gloom, and Bombshell Betty are joined by new draft pick Cherrylicious, a veteran flat track skater ready to make a name for herself on the banked track.
The Swarm, San Diego’s banked track home team, returns to the Doll Factory for the first time since last year’s Championships. Captain Bonnie D. Stroir and co-captain Some Brero hope to regain some of the Swarm’s 2009 momentum by grounding Fight Crew with a definitive victory.
Mother Echo will rock out at halftime and DJ Crystal Deth will keep the beats going all night long. L.A. Derby Dolls events offer a full range of entertainment off the track, with the Vendor Village featuring art, jewelry and clothes, food from Garage Pizza and Hot Dog on a Stick, and healthy beverages from Ex-Drinks, with beer from Tecate and wine from Murphy-Goode, poured strongly by Alex’s Bar.
The San Diego Derby Dolls (http://sd.derbydolls.com) are L.A. Derby Dolls’ sister league and the nation’s first banked and flat track hybrid league.
The L.A. Derby Dolls are one of only five leagues in the U.S. playing roller derby on a banked track. Like most modern female roller derby leagues, the Derby Dolls are volunteer-run and give back to the community that has embraced them. The league also operates the Junior Derby Dolls for girls ages 8-17.
Tickets are now available to purchase at http://www.derbydolls.com/la. General admission tickets are $20; VIP tickets are $40. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and close at half time. The Doll Factory is located at 1910 W. Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90026 (between Alvarado and Union). General parking is available for $8 at Silver Lake Medical Center, 1711 W. Temple St. (near the intersection of Temple and Burlington), one block east of the Doll Factory. This is a 21 and over event featuring beer and wine. Please have your ID, leave your cameras/recording devices at home, and note that all concessions and most vendors accept cash only.
About the L.A. Derby Dolls:
Founded in 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls (http://www.derbydolls.com/la) are Southern California’s premiere women’s banked-track, quad-skating, roller derby league. Within the league, five fierce teams battle for dominance: Fight Crew, Sirens, Swarm, Tough Cookies and Varsity Brawlers. While their uniforms may be stylish and their names playful, do not be fooled by appearances – the L.A. Derby Dolls are athletes who skate a sport that is unscripted and real. Honored as a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association, the L.A. Derby Dolls embody the do-it-yourself, “for the skaters, by the skaters” ethos of modern women’s roller derby.
