examiner.com | 25 June 2012 - L.A. Derby Dolls to host fundraiser for Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles

The 3rd annual fundraising event TWENTYWONDER, A Carnival of the Mind, presented by Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles (DSALA) will be hosted again by the famed L.A. Derby Dolls on Saturday, July 7. The evening will be a bursting expo of art, science, music and comedy, plus an all-star roller derby bout featuring the L.A. Derby Dolls vs. the San Diego Derby Dolls. Proceeds will benefit DSALA’s efforts to support those born with Trisomy 21/Down syndrome living in greater Los Angeles.

“This year’s event is being served up in one huge dessert bowl of sweet pop-cultural confections flavor packed with an amazing group of 150 volunteers- performers, makers, builders, thinkers and skaters – donating their time and talent to lovingly blend the creative and surreal ingredients of Greater Los Angeles into an evening of wonder and awareness. With equal parts of art, science, music, and laughter we are 100% positive you will leave TWENTYWONDER, by evening’s end, a whole lot happier than when you arrived,” said Jim Hodgson, Director of Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES — Most people who go to an event for the first time and are hooked come back again and again as spectators.

Larissa Duron, a Colton High graduate, took a different approach. A friend took her to an LA Derby Dolls roller derby bout in 2006, and when she got hooked she decided to put on the skates and pads and go join them.

“There was the sport of it, and it was a woman-run organization,” she recalls. “There were girls out there, all ages and backgrounds, who were just doing something that was completely outside the box of any type of sport.

“I know back in the day there was roller derby, but there was just something rare about it that made me think, ‘This is for me.’ ”

bankedtracknews.com - LADD Ri-Ettes Take Battle on the Bank Championship against SDDD!

LADD Ri-Ettes vs SDDD Derby Dolls Championship Game

After losing to the LA Derby Dolls Ri-Ettes twice this year, the San Diego Derby Dolls Wildfires squared off against the Ri-Ettes for the Championship game of Battle on the Bank V. San Diego held on the BotB Championship trophy for two years, and the last time the Ri-Ettes won Battle on the Bank was it's maiden voyage in 2008.

San Diego and LA swapped leads for the first 5 jams, but when LA grabbed the lead back at 24-13 with an 11 point Power Jam from Cris Affliction, they just plowed ahead to finish off the first quarter with a 54 point lead at 78-24 LA.

SDDD didn't fare much better in the second quarter even as Kiki Diazz brought home 13 in an SD Power Jam, 79-43. LA continued to widen their lead to 109-54, and Cris Affliction took a big 15 point Power Jam to widen it further, 124-54 LA. But San Diego was able to hold them to 128 for the remainder of the half as Heidi Evidence and Kiki Diazz took SDDD up to 128-71 LA.
